Me Then You: what happens to what you write

Short version: everything you write stays on your phone. There is no account, no sign-in, no server of ours, and nothing is sent anywhere.
What the app holds
Everything you and your partner answer, your lists, your journal and its photographs, the gifts you have logged, your private notes, and the dates you have saved. All of it sits in one file inside the app's own storage, which no other app on your phone can read.
Where it goes
Nowhere. We do not run a server, and the app does not have an account system. It works with the phone in aeroplane mode.
Two things are worth being precise about:
- Your own iPhone backup. If you have iCloud Backup switched on, this file is included in your phone's backup, in your own iCloud, encrypted, the same as every other app. That is Apple's backup of your phone, not ours: we cannot see inside it.
- "Save a copy" in Settings. That makes a file and hands it to you. Where it goes after that is entirely up to you: Files, AirDrop, an email to yourself. Nothing sends it on its own.
The swap
The one thing that moves is the swap itself, and it goes straight from your phone to theirs over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, encrypted, with the two phones in the same room. It does not go over the internet and there is no server of ours in the middle of it. The app asks for permission to see other devices on your local network for exactly this and nothing else.
Nothing is sent until the other person has been asked, by name, and has said yes.
What crosses is your answers, your birthday and picture, the dates your answers created, and the things you have said you want. What does not cross is your journal, your private notes about them, your gift log, which questions you skipped, and how you have done at the guessing game. A copy of everything is for you. A swap is for them, and they are not the same thing.
What we collect about you
Nothing. No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier, no tracking of any kind. We do not know how many people use this app, which is a deliberate choice and a slightly annoying one.
Other people's details
The app asks you about the people around you: a partner's mum's birthday, a friend's name, what is best not brought up with somebody. Those people have not agreed to anything, so the app treats their details the way you would a note in a drawer: it stays on the phone, it is never sent anywhere, and it is never used for anything except showing it back to you.
Photographs
When you add a photograph to a memory, the app is handed that one picture and nothing else. It never asks for access to your photo library, so it cannot see anything you have not chosen.
Getting rid of it
- Start again, in Settings, wipes everything on the phone. There is no copy anywhere else for us to delete, because there never was one.
- Deleting the app does the same thing.
- Unpairing stops their page from being updated. It does NOT delete what they already sent you, because that is already on your phone, and promising a deletion we cannot perform would be a lie.
Children
The app is not for children and does not knowingly hold anything about them.
If any of this changes
If the app ever gains a server, an account, or anything that leaves the phone, this page changes first and the app says so before it happens. A privacy policy that quietly stops being true is worse than not having one.
